Spam-a-not

Posted by: Peter Scott on: September 17, 2007

I am getting slightly downhearted over the volume of Blog spam that heads my way. True Akismet catches and destroys a large amount; and here I apologise to the genuine posters that get caught, these tend to be those who post multiple links and have free-mail accounts, but if you feel that the debate would benefit from your contribution, you could always drop me a line, and I will see if I can get your post through. Some things do slip the filter and appear on the blog; I do try to remove these offending posts as soon as I am aware of them. Some ‘borderline spam’ posts might get a reprise if the content is on topic for the original post or follow-ups, but I might remove URLs to inappropriate sites.

I have noticed that a lot of spam comment goes to the same old posts, so, as and when I get incoming spam on an old post that is not really an active topic I will lock that post from further comment.

Please remember, I blog because I enjoy it, it costs me nothing (except time, which I gladly give).  I do not enjoy deleting spam, it is a waste of my time, time I could perhaps use to write new posts.

Spammers have rights too!

The right to get their rubbish deleted as soon as possible.

I hope this gets through! :)

Cheers

Tim…

Ironically, I fished Tim’s note out of the spam box…

Are you not able to activate a captcha on wordpress? Much better than filtering out the stuff later on. The captcha’s challenge on blogspot is really good identifiable, so it’s no problem for people writing a comment. On my blog I don’t have any problems with spam comments.

Patrick – Captchas are not an option here on Worpdress.com – if I hosted my own blog (I wonder if lilacsuit.com is still out there) I might be able to challenge the spammer, but there again the visually impaired might struggle to use it.

Maybe you can use the reCaptcha (http://recaptcha.net/plugins/wordpress/) for WordPress. At least this Captcha is quite good readable and uses the entered information for a book scanning project.
