WordPress two months on

Posted by: Peter Scott on: August 21, 2006

It has been just over two months since I moved the contents of this blog from blogspot.com to worpdress.com. So perhaps time to take stock and review how things are.

Page hits

One of the big fears about moving is that people can no longer find you. It takes a while until Google and the other web search tools find you. But from the page hits counter on the wordpress dashboard things are holding up well, in fact increased (no doubt from links to new content and the nice remarks made by others – for which I thank you) page hits

the graph shows hits for the month before and two after the move

One disguised blessing for Blogspot users was the incompatibility of the RSS feed with orablogs; this meant that I had republish my feed using Feedburner, so all I had to do keep orablogs knowing of my existence was to edit my feedburner source URL. The number of readers showing in feedburner is increasingfeeds

and WordPress also reports high number of direct readers of that feed

Blog design

I like the wordpress template I use; the blue looks professional and also matches my eyes. Having a calendar was something I always wanted. There are a few quirky things like links having to be classified to appear in the link bar and the ban on embed javascript. The later has affected the data I can collect from Statcounter – I still know where my visitors ISP are and also how many visits they make, but not the pages they hit or the referring sites or even the search engine terms they use to find me – this sort of thing is on the WordPress blog stats page but consolidated to a per day basis

[...] Peter Scott accidentally reminds me that: [...]

The Hairy Beast is new to blogging – just put up his first one eleven days ago on wordpress – and is quite pleased with the results. His page has had 3,995 hits so far. He has no idea if that is average or high or low, but it seems pretty good. WordPress is easy to use and just a little tinkering with the simple tools provided produces a page that looks quite presentable.

Perhaps his next area of study should be this “feedburner” thingie.

Added benefit: Being Featured blog in Oracle category.
